Type Locality and Naming

Junggar Basin. The reference section is located at Anjihai, south of Shawan County, Junggar basin. Named by the Compilation Team of the Stratigraphic Table of Xinjiang in 1981.


Lithology and Thickness

Lacustrine sediments composed of purplish red, grayish green and gray mudstone with marlstone, limestone and sandstone. Thicknesses generally range from 500 to 600 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the Ziniquanzi Fm

Upper contact

It possibly has a disconformable contact with the overlying Oligocene or early Miocene Shawan Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in the area from the Changji River to Tuositai and Tugulu, Manas, Huoergesi, Anjihai etc.

Fossils

The formation mainly contains the ostracods Limnocythere dahangouensis, Ilyocypris cornae, Cyprinotus (Heterocypris) fortilis, Eucypris bella, Austrocypris (Kassinina) sp., etc.; vertebrates include fishes, turtles, the crocodiles Dzungarisuchus manasensis and the mammals Bothriodon sp. etc. In addition, the charophytes Maedlerisphaera and Stephanochara, etc. are found in wells.
